RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina Representative Bill Daughtridge
(R-Nash) was announced as the winner of the GOP Tailgate Contest
by The North Carolina Federation Young Republicans on Friday.
The contest encouraged Republicans of all ages throughout North
Carolina to show their support for the GOP's candidates by
hosting Republican-themed tailgate parties at sporting events
and music concerts that had over 100 spectators.
Representative Daughtridge, who is a Candidate for NC Treasurer
and also President of Daughtridge Gas & Oil Company of Rocky
Mount and Daughtridge Gas Company in Greenville and Roanoke
Rapids, won the contest with a tailgate photo at the 16th annual
Rollin' on the River party in Rocky Mount, NC. Daughtridge said
"We were pleased to participate as we helped register voters at
our event and encouraged them to become involved in the
political process." Among those featured in the picture are
family and friends of Representative Bill Daughtridge,
Representative Fred Steen (Rowan), Rocky Mount Mayor Elect David
Combs, Elvis and of course – the Pink Cadillac.
"It is fantastic that this grassroots idea has continued to grow
and more elected officials, candidates and their supporters are
seeing the benefits and having fun with it!" says Dave Reynolds,
creator of the GOP Tailgate Contest and immediate past chairman
of the Wake County Young Republicans. "The GOP Tailgate Contest
was established as a way to get more people involved in politics
and get more people excited about supporting their candidate."
After the contest's second year in North Carolina and a 2008
election that is capturing everyone's attention, the GOP
Tailgate Contest is projected to expand nationwide later this
year. While the contest received more than a handful of
out-of-state tailgate pictures, only those that were taken by
North Carolina registered Republicans were eligible for the
contest's prizes.
Josh Shriner of Wake County finished 2nd place with a
picture taken September 15 at the NC State vs. Wofford football
game at Carter Finley Stadium. Shriner's tailgate featured
several campaign signs for local races in Wake County. Mr.
Shriner said, "I have never been much on politics, but I go to
plenty of sporting events and concerts. Putting signs out to
support my candidates was easy and it helps get the word out to
a large crowd. The tailgate contest was a win-win!" Courtney
Bass of Wake County won third place with a tailgate picture
taken in Raleigh at the NC State vs. University of North
Carolina football game on November 10. Bass's tailgate showed
support for a Presidential candidate and NC State Auditor, Les
Merritt, who finished in the top 3 in the 2006 GOP Tailgate
Contest.
