1) What would you do to help connect the centers of the former Fuquay Springs and the former Varina to form a more cohesive town?
Charlie Adcock: An overlay district that encompasses both downtowns and the streets connecting is one tool available that would help plan for future development. Zoning needs to be consistent between the districts to encourage a walkable environment. I would also support following many of the recommendations made by the North Carolina Department of Commerce Main Street Program. Each downtown offers a wide variety of benefits to the citizens of Fuquay-Varina. Bringing these areas together with sidewalks and other improvements is a great goal, but I would first focus on completing the streetscape in downtown Fuquay while also working to create a more pedestrian friendly environment in downtown Varina. Our unique history of two communities should be promoted and both downtowns should retain their own identity.
2) How would you deal with growth while maintaining Fuquay-Varina's characteristic small town feel?
Charlie Adcock: Fuquay-Varina is a great place to live because of our community-minded citizens and our strong support for families. As commissioner, I will support the small town values I grew up with in Fuquay-Varina and that I believe have given our town its characteristic feel. I will support new and expanded parks and cultural facilities for our citizens. I will work with and seek input from the faith-based community and active civic groups to ensure all the needs of our citizens are considered when making decisions. We should continue to work hard to bring jobs to Fuquay-Varina. Economic Development is the key to creating more jobs. These jobs will expand our tax base and allow our citizens to work where they live. All of these things together will promote a continued sense of pride in our community and will help preserve our small town feel.
3) Which bond-funded projects to you think are most urgent? What would you do to seek additional funds if necessary?
Charlie Adcock: I believe the long-term prosperity of our town is directly tied to the quality of our transportation system. Specifically, Judd Parkway needs to be completed around Fuquay-Varina. While on the Planning Board I voted to approve Fuquay-Varina's Transportation Plan and Land Use Plan. These plans are valuable tools when determining our transportation priorities. Also, expanding our water and sewer system will prove to be key to efficiently handle our projected growth. High-quality planning allows for the effective use of citizen approved bond funds and will enable Fuquay-Varina to more adequately address growth without raising taxes.
